On March 12, 1997, a man pulled up in a red Pontiac Grand Am at 10:30 a.m. The man entered the store and walked around for a bit. He waited for a mother and daughter to leave the store. He approached the counter and spoke to Leah. She opened the register and handed him the money, and laid on the floor. The man pulled out a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol from his pocket, leaned over the counter and fired at least three shots. Leah was hit twice in the arm and once in her head, killing her instantly. The unknown man walked out with a soda, a pack of cigarettes, a lighter, $150 and a full tank of gas. The car had no front license plate and the rear was impossible to read.
