Karlie was 16 years old when she vanished. When her mom, Lindsay Fairley moved to Nevada, Karlie decided to live with her dad so she could stay close to her friends. Everything appeared to be going smoothly, at first. However, things started to change around the time of her disappearance. She started to experiment with drugs and her grades began to drop.
A friend of Karlie’s told Fox News that days before her disappearance, she started experiencing frantic “episodes” during which she would get paranoid about being tracked through her smartphone.
On the evening of October 12, 2018, Karlie asked Melissa if she could attend her high school’s football game. However, she went to a house party instead. At this party, Karlie smoked marijuana with her boyfriend and other people at this party. According to witnesses at the party, Karlie grew agitated, scared, and paranoid. Melissa received a call from Karlie asking to come pick her up. Melissa arrived to pick her up around 8 p.m, but Karlie was nowhere to be found. Melissa finally found Karlie running down the street.
When Karlie got into the vehicle, Melissa realized that she was acting disoriented so she started recording a video. She wanted to be able to show Karlie what she was acting like the next morning. Allegedly in the recording you can hear Karlie acting scared, saying that Melissa was going to kill her. Karlie also asked Melissa to call 911. Melissa told her she would call but she never made the call. When they got home, Melissa gave Karlie a salad and protein bar. As she was eating the salad, she called the lettuce “demon lettuce”. It was obvious that Karlie was under the influence of something.
According to Melissa, Karlie wanted her stepmom to stay with her. So they went to Karlie’s bedroom. They stayed up most of the night talking. Melissa last saw Karlie approximately 5:45 am, lying awake in bed. Melissa fell asleep. Around 7:15 am, Melissa woke up and she wasn’t there. Melissa told Dr. Phil that she instantly panicked.
She went in and got Karlie’s father, Zach. They jumped into a vehicle and started searching for her. Melissa saw a neighbor outside, so she stopped and asked if he had seen her daughter. In a video interview on the FBI’s YouTube page with Richard Eddy, he stated he was in his hot tube around 6:30 or 7 am when he noticed a young girl with long brown hair walking by his house. He remembered thinking it was unusual because it was chilly out. She was wearing a white T-Shirt with no jacket or coat. She was holding a paper. So Eddy offered to go look in a canyon that wasn’t too far from his residents to see if she might be there.
At this point, Zach called Karlie’s mother Lindsey and told her that Karlie was gone! They reported Karlie missing to the Mono County Sheriff’s Office around 9:35 am. They started using helicopters, search dogs, and search teams. There were 3 reported sightings of Karlie around White Mountain Road and U.S. 6 that morning.
