On April 29, 1976, Jay was reported missing after leaving his home to shoot his BB gun near the Elkhorn River near the Riverside Lakes area, south of Waterloo. His body was found floating in the Missouri River on May 19, 1976. Autopsy showed that Jay suffered a fractured skull and there was no evidence to indicate sexual molestation.
